Recommended – Pipe Bands!, Georgetown Highland Games, Georgetown Fairgrounds, Saturday, June 9, All Day, $20

June 9

$20

By Alexandra Heck Independent Free Press…

Have you ever heard 700 pipes playing the same tune in unison?

According to Adrian Miller, president of the Georgetown Highland Games, it’s one of the most moving experiences imaginable.

“When you hear a song played by 700 people, the same song at the same time, it’s riveting,” he said. “There’s no way to describe it unless you see it.”

Over 30 different pipe bands come out for the events, including a number of individual musicians.

The Highland Games are one of Georgetown’s oldest and largest community events, drawing crowds of over 4,500 people to come and watch the Scottish inspired festivities.

From pipe music, to dancing and heavyweight challenges; the Georgetown fairgrounds have a steady stream of action throughout the day on June 9.

“It’s certainly a family tradition,” said Miller, whose parents helped start the games back in Brampton before bringing it to Georgetown in 1975. “It’s a fixture of the town.”

This year marks the return of sheepdog demonstrations, where a trainer will be showing off the traditional Scottish methods of herding sheep.

“We’re actually bringing something back that we haven’t had in over 10 years,” he said. “It’s always entertaining, especially for kids, they love it.”

The Georgetown event is one of the first of the season for Highland Games in the area, which draws competitors from all over North America.

“Regardless of where you’re from, we’re all the same, we’d like to share our heritage, our Scottish roots,” said Miller. “Come out and enjoy, be part of that family. Be a Scot for a day.”
